The English department of the college has a pivotal role as English is a compulsory subject across faculties. The department is actively involved in almost all the activities of the college. It is the biggest department in the college with four members, all qualified, competent and recognized Postgraduate teachers.

Most of the students come from tribal and rural areas and very poor socioeconomic background. Many of them are first generation learners. As English is not taught as a compulsory subject in schools, the entry level competencies of the students is very poor. The problem is even more grave as tribal students do not even have good L1(First language) competence. To cope up with this problem we have a bridge course as per the guidelines of the university. The compulsory English course is offered at two levels of competence – ‘A’ stream and ‘B’ Stream (lower level). ‘B’ Stream is offered for those with no formal exposure to English language. These students did not study English at 10+2 level. This becomes more significant for the department as 80% students are in ‘B’ stream.

The departmental section in the central library has 4958 books and subscribes to 05 journals/periodicals. The department also has access to computer and internet facility. We have a good collection of literary VCDs/DVDs. We also have multimedia packages for pronunciation and language training. Some of the movies in our library are King Lear, Gandhi, Jane Eyre, A Tale of Two Cities etc.

The department relies heavily on ICT and modern teaching methods. The faculty members use internet and computer facility for preparing learning material and for delivery. We regularly screen literary movies, using LCD projector, followed by discussion to make the learning experience more enjoyable. We have also introduced student seminars.
